You may have heard the term FPSO-Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading unit. Simply put, an FPSO is an "oil and gas processing plant" that floats at sea, handling the extraction, processing, storage, and transport of oil or natural gas.
FPSOs are incredibly valuable assets-often costing billions of dollars to build-and are regarded as the "jewel in the crown" of the offshore engineering industry. Ensuring their stable operation in harsh marine environments requires the silent, reliable support of countless pieces of customized equipment.
We are one of the key players working behind the scenes to make this happen.
Why do FPSOs need drying and purification systems?
Offshore environments are characterized by high humidity and salinity. If compressed air contains moisture or impurities, it can lead to:
• Instrument failure, compromising the monitoring of critical data;
• Instability in nitrogen generation systems, creating safety risks;
• Accelerated pipeline corrosion, shortening equipment lifespan.
More importantly, FPSOs operate in highly flammable and explosive environments where absolute safety is paramount; consequently, compressed air drying equipment must meet rigorous explosion-proof standards.
The Petrobras Project Challenge
In 2023, we undertook an FPSO project for Petrobras, tasked with customizing 10 explosion-proof Marine Dryer Skids.
While "10 units" might sound straightforward, the real challenge lay in meeting stringent standards:
• ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) certification: Ensuring compliance with international offshore safety regulations;
• IECEx explosion-proof certification: Covering all explosion-proof requirements, from the main unit down to the solenoid valves;
• ASME pressure vessel code: Guaranteeing the strength and reliability of core components;
• Brazilian NR-13 standard: Ensuring local regulatory compliance in Brazil.
This meant that every aspect-from design to production, down to the last screw and valve-had to undergo rigorous quality control; there was no room for any weak links. Our Solution
Ultimately, we delivered 10 customized, explosion-proof marine dryer skids that met the following requirements:
• Versatile Air Supply: Providing stable, dry compressed air for various shipboard systems, including instrumentation and nitrogen generation units;
• High Reliability: Ensuring long-term operation in environments characterized by salt spray, vibration, and high humidity;
• Comprehensive Explosion Protection: Establishing a closed-loop safety system that ensures explosion-proof integrity from the overall assembly down to individual components.
This project represents more than just an equipment delivery; it marks a significant showcase of "Made in China" capabilities within the high-end international offshore engineering market.
Behind offshore energy operations lie not only massive FPSO hulls but also countless "unsung heroes"-such as these drying and purification systems.
While they may not grab headlines, they play a vital role in safeguarding the stability and safety of energy production at critical moments.
Successfully enabling domestically manufactured equipment to meet rigorous international standards and serve world-class energy enterprises is, in itself, a major milestone.
This demonstrates that Risheng Equipment is capable of not only establishing a firm foothold in the domestic market but also shining brightly on the global stage.
